2010 Race for Chase and Treefrog Trot

THIRD ANNUAL “RACE FOR CHASE” TO BENEFIT Fifth Grade Legacy Mosaic

Chase Street Elementary School’s Race for Chase draws hundreds of contestants from across the Southeast for a chance to compete, exercise, and to support a good cause. The school’s Parent Teacher Organization is planning a third race for Saturday, March 27 at 9:00 a.m (Treefrog Trot at 8:30 a.m.).

Dedicated runners will find registration and information about the race on all the usual websites: www.runningintheusa.com, www.active.com, and in Georgia Runner Magazine’s Grand Prix listings. The race expects to draw runners from far and near. Local athletes, and even those who are happy to take advantage of the race’s “walkers and strollers welcome” policy, can register on race day. Additionally, a one-mile “Treefrog Trot” is open to anyone (especially kids!), starting at 8:30 a.m.

The race course begins and ends at the school, with ample parking at the corner of Chase Street and Dubose Avenue. Registration is $15 before March 19, and $20 thereafter. All proceeds benefit the Chase Street Elementary PTO’s projects for the coming year.

Fun prizes will be awarded and T-shirts are provided to all registered runners (while supplies last!). Refreshments will be available to runners, and a good time is a sure thing!

Volunteers Needed for Family Science Night

The PTO is hosting an Our Shared Forest (OSF) Family Science Night February 18th from 6 to 7:30 at Chase Street Elementary, but to put the P in the PTO part, we need you to volunteer to help run this event. OSF is a standards-based, multi-cultural, environmental education project about the importance of conserving existing habitat and reestablishing fragmented habitats of neotropical migratory birds in North and South America. Our Shared Forests connects local education to global conservation! The event will feature fun, hands-on science activities, live insects and snakes from the University of Georgia and a coffee tasting of 1000 Faces Coffee (available at our school as a PTO fundraiser).

I need people to help make copies, pick-up supplies, set-up and clean-up, decorate the gym, perform a puppet show (puppets and script provided), make desserts, serve desserts, and just generally help as needed. We would like to have enough volunteers so that families can work in shifts and then spend the other half of the night enjoying science night with their family.

Family Garden Workday RESCHEDULED

Because we were rained out last Saturday, we will be gathering at Chase Street Saturday OCTOBER 24 from 9 to Noon. We have tools and jobs for you. The PTO will provide coffee, but bring a couple of muffins to share!

The rain date is SUNDAY OCTOBER 25, same time.

Chase Elementary School is a “Publix Partner!”

When you shop at Publix, have the cashier scan your keychain tag. A percentage of what you spend will be given to our school. If many people participate, this can really add up. The PTO has lots of keychain tags, and we can order more if we run out, so feel free to get one for neighbors, grandparents, or co-workers. It can be used at any Publix in Georgia or Florida, not just in Athens.

Please ask your child’s teacher to send home one or more Publix tags if you or someone you know shops at Publix. You can also ask for one from Rosa Ghosheh at the front desk in the Chase Street lobby.

Cuando vaya a Publix, muestre el cajero la etiqueta en las llaves. Un porcentaje de cuanto dinero gasta en el supermercado dará a la escuela. Si mucha gente participen, la escuela recibirá mucho. Hay muchas etiquetas por las llaves, y el PTO puede pedir por más, por eso denlas a los vecinos, abuelos, o colaboradoras. Puede usar la etiqueta a cualquier Publix que está en Georgia o Florida, no solamente los que están en Athens.

The money earned from Box Tops from Education now goes to the school gardens! Each coupon is worth 10 cents and it adds up fast. Put them in the box in the school office or the collection envelopes in the classrooms. Get friends and family to clip the coupons for us!

One For Books

Dear Parents & Families,

During Book Fair, parents are invited to donate loose change, dollars, or other contributions to the One for Books program. If you would like to make a donation, please stop by the front office or the media center when you come for your conference. Every dollar collected for One for Books is used to help CSE students buy books and to improve our school’s library. Scholastic Book Fairs will match the One for Books dollars we raise with a donation of up to a million books to three non-profit programs devoted to improving reading skills among children: Kids in Distressed Situations, National Center for Family Literacy, and Toys for Tots. Pack your bags and come join us for Destination Book Fair: Read Around the World! Book Fair is coming to Chase Street Elementary on October 19-23, and a special family event is planned for Thursday, October 22. All students will visit Book Fair on Monday, October 19, and you are invited to come with your child any time during the week. Joining your child at the book fair is a great way to share in the joy of a good book. Once you shop our Book Fair Around the World, you can continue the adventure by having a family reading night. If you come to Book Fair with your child, your child’s name will be entered into a drawing for a FREE book. Book Fair hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday: 7:30am-3:30pm, Thursday: 7:30am-1:00pm and 5:00pm-8:00pm, and Friday: 7:30am-11:00am.
